One CFL bulb can last up to a decade—and through Efficiency Vermont, you can get them for as little as 99 cents each.
Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs (CFLs) use less energy than traditional incandescent light bulbs, and can last up to 10 years. Just one ENERGY STAR® CFL can save you more than $30 in energy costs over the lifetime of the bulb. Plus, we have bought the price down to 99 cents per bulb at retailers across the state, making CFLs the easy choice.

The classic spiral CFL is versatile and works in a wide range of fixtures, just about anywhere you used to use a traditional incandescent bulb.
Candelabra CFLs are perfect for chandeliers, ceiling fans, wall sconces, covered outdoor lights, and other decorative fixtures. Their slim shape makes them ideal for narrow fixtures where a bigger bulb won't fit.
Globe-shaped CFLs can replace incandescents in bathroom vanities and ceiling pendants. Like other encapsulated CFLs, globes can take a few seconds to reach full brightness. Once they are warmed up, they provide the same amount of light as an incandescent bulb, but use much less energy.
Reflector CFLs are ideal for recessed ceiling fixtures because they spread light wider and more evenly. Reflector CFLs also work well in track lighting fixtures, as well as in outdoor fixtures. Make sure the bulbs you use in recessed fixtures are labeled as "suitable for use in enclosed fixtures," and bulbs you use in outdoor fixtures are labeled "damp location approved."
A-style CFLs are the same as spiral CFLs, but are encapsulated to have the same look of traditional incandescent bulbs. They can be used anywhere you would use traditional light bulbs, even with clip-on lampshades that don't work with spiral CFLs. Like other encapsulated CFLs, they can take a few seconds to reach full brightness.
Dimmable CFLs work in dimmable fixtures or lamps. Because they look the same as the classic spiral, make sure to check the package to ensure you are purchasing the right bulb. Dimmable CFLs maintain their soft white light color more consistently than incandescent bulbs. They dim to 10-40% of their original brightness.
Three-Way CFLs use one-third as much electricity as their incandescent counter-parts, but are slightly larger in size. They look similar to the classic spiral or dimmable CFLs, so make sure to check the package when you purchase. Three-way bulbs typically come in a soft white color temperature.
